The CAER II Discussion Paper (DP) series was researched and written between 1995-2000 and now numbers more than 80 papers. Many of these were undertaken from the perspective of economic growth, and designed to report on the causal factors and variables. Our interest has been twofold: How a variable would affect economic growth and how that variable would be affected by growth. For example, not only in how climate affects growth, but also in how climate is affected by it.
The series enlarges considerably our understanding of economic development. It introduces such factors as poverty and income distribution, the demographic transition from high to low birth rates and death rates, geography, climate and disease, telecommunications and information technologies, and war and reconstruction. These papers also recognize several types of economic transition beyond that from less developed country to industrialized country. There are, in addition, systemic transitions (in Europe), failing and failed states (in Africa), and emerging markets (in Asia). Many factors prominent in our earlier thinking receive attention as well: financial development, trade and investment, monetary and fiscal policy. These papers make contributions on nearly every issue in development economics today and open many new paths.
