Environment & Sustainable Development

Overview

CID’s program on Environment and Sustainable Development addressed the challenges of environmental sustainability in the context of economic development. The program conducted multidisciplinary research involving the natural and social sciences in order to better understand physical systems and human behavior as they interact with each other in the developing world.

Research objectives of the program were:

• To better understand complex ecosystems and their responses to human intervention.
• To better understand the behavior of individuals, communities and institutions in using environmental resources.
• To analyze the environmental and economic implications of heavy dependence on resource extraction.
• To identify and analyze strategies for sustainable development based on productivity growth, clean industrial production and non-extractive resource use.
