Description:
The goal of the seminar “Knowledge Systems for Promoting Public Health in the Developing World” is to extend into the public health domain our continuing efforts to understand how institutional design affects the success of efforts to link research-based knowledge with public policy interventions in development. “Knowledge systems” are the institutions and incentive structures spanning basic research and its funding through field trials and implementation to adaptive feedback from experience to revised R&D agendas. The project responds to the need, articulated in a workshop last year, for a sustained empirical research program on the institutional determinants of effective systems for linking knowledge with action in the field of public health.
The project will convene three seminar sessions in Fall 2005 to discuss: “Knowledge, public health and development: How institutions can help or hinder the application of research-based knowledge to public health interventions in developing countries.” These sessions will explore the challenges to research communities concerned with public health and development in the context of changing global institutions. The first session will present findings on the institutional determinants of knowledge system effectiveness in other sectors, and summarize the relevant findings of recent reports on needs for comparable work in the public health sector. The second session will follow the same format, with presentations from one public health researcher, and one public health applications expert, on what is most needed, and what is possible, in efforts to harness S&T to achieve public health objectives. The third session will seek to develop a collaborative research proposal and funding strategy for a longer term program of field work.
