February, 2000
Barro R. and J.W. Lee
README
The two EXCEL files contain updates of the data on educational attainment at various levels for a broad number of countries in the world (see Barro, Robert J. and Jong-Wha Lee, "International Data on Educational Attainment: Updates and Implications," manuscript, Harvard University, February 2000.). The data set provides the estimates for two different age groups- over age 15 and over age 25- and a breakdown by sex at five-year intervals for the years 1960-2000. It also includes the number of years of schooling achieved by the average person at the various levels and at all levels of schooling combined.
The PANEL_DATA reports the same data by the order of Summers-Heston V.5.0 country code (as in Barro-Lee Data Set). It has all four worksheets: two worksheets for each age group of the population - one for the distribution of educational attainment and the other for the average years of schooling. The name of the variables is as follows. The last two numbers behind a variable denotes the year of the observations: year=99 is used to denote 2000. If the variable has 15 in the middle of the name, it refers to the group of the population aged 15 and above.
