CID Position Available: Assistant Director

Position Summary:

The Center for International Development at Harvard University (CID) is recognized as a global leader in research to advance human well-being and social progress in the developing world by expanding the understanding of development challenges and offering viable solutions to problems of global poverty. The CID has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director. The successful candidate will be a senior member of the CID administrative staff. S/he works closely with the Executive Director and the administrative team to ensure the efficient daily operation and financial management of the Center.

General Purpose:

The Assistant Director manages the administrative and budgetary aspects of the Center for International Development.

Position Responsibilities:

Responsible for managing all administrative and budgetary aspects of the Center for International Development. Work with staff to ensure the efficient operation and financial management of the Center, and supervise one full-time employee. Administer the budget, monitor financial performance of projects, oversee sponsored gift and endowment contracts, manage monthly variance reporting process and financial and management reporting to the CID principals and HKS Office of Financial Services. Establish and disseminate CID's policies, particularly focused on new appointments, finances, general center processes, and CID office space. Provide strategy for administration and internal governance (policies and procedures) within CID. Work with Executive Director in writing annual reports to the HKS leadership and other strategic reports as necessary. Oversee the internal appointment process and manage HR-related issues. Develop budgeting process for new initiatives as they occur. Work closely with the Executive Director to prepare fund-raising proposals and sponsored research grants. Ensure compliance with laws, regulations and university guidelines. Represent CID at public events and internal meetings in lieu of Executive Director, as needed. The successful candidate will gain exposure to economic and sustainable development issues as well as extensive experience in a high-profile, fast-paced office, alongside friendly and energetic staff.

Essential Skills and Experience:

BA required. Masters in public administration, finance or the equivalent preferred with 5-7 years of progressive financial administrative and supervisory experience. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Proven ability to work with a variety of constituents in building and managing new processes. Previous experience in federally sponsored research administration in university or research environment and experience with the Harvard financial systems desired. Sense of humor, optimism, and maturity are a plus.

Nonessential Skills and Experience:

Experience in developing countries or interest in development issues a plus.
