Pioneer Internship in Madagascar

As a grassroots development organization Azafady works directly with local communities ensuring that our work is requested by, as well as being useful to, the people of Madagascar. Although we have a skilled and dedicated team made up of Malagasy and non-Malagasy staff in the South East of the country, much of our work is dependent upon our interns.

Over the course of the Program, as a Pioneer intern, you will have the opportunity to learn how a small NGO operates and the inherent challenges that it faces when working in a developing country. More specifically you will be working on our projects in the field and gaining understanding of the resource needs of impoverished village communities and how this impacts on conservation efforts. Our projects are led by some of the most competent conservation and development workers on the island and are entirely based on communities' expressed needs. You will be an integral part of our team and gain an insight into real grassroots conservation and development.

Our Pioneer schemes last for 10 weeks (or less by arrangement) and begin in January, April, July, and October each year and you can apply to start on any scheme whose timetable suits you. For further information on Azafady please visit our website on www.madagascar.co.uk. For more details on the Pioneer Madagascar Program (and application forms), go to the same website and follow the connections for Pioneer Intern Program.

Summer Study Abroad in United Arab Emirates

The School of International Service at American University offers our summer study abroad opportunity to the United Arab Emirates. This seminar examines a number of themes pertinent to political, ideological, and socioeconomic dynamics in the Middle East. The objective of this seminar is threefold: (1) to introduce students to the major political and socioeconomic challenges facing Middle Eastern states and societies, particularly the Gulf countries; (2) a literature survey of important debates shaping the discipline of Middle East studies; and (3) an introduction to key policy debates about the region. The themes examined in this seminar will include, for example, the debates on Orientalism and Arab nationalism, the legacies of Middle East state formation, the politics of ethnic, religious and sectarian identities, the rentier state and persistence of monarchical regimes, the politics of gender, the challenges of political liberalization, political economic restructuring, Islamist politics, and the impact of external and internal calls for reform.

Students can select either one of two, or both formal components in this learning experience. The first component will be the core seminar taught by Professor Bassell Salloukh of the Department of International Studies at AUS. One element of Professor Salloukh’s seminar will be educational excursions to government agencies, think tanks and business associations. Professor Salloukh earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from McGill University. His research interests include postwar state building and the electoral process in Lebanon, the politics of contestation under authoritarianism in the Arab world, and the domestic and foreign politics of Syria and Jordan.

A second component is Arabic language training. Level III Arabic will be taught for academic credit. This course will promote the advanced active use of modern standard Arabic. Emphasis will be placed on the development of fluency and accuracy in oral and written communication. Reading and writing proficiency are expanded with a focus on discourse skills and review of acquired grammatical structures. For students that want an introduction to Arabic, and intensive non-credit group tutorial will be offered.

For more information on this and other summer opportunities, please visit the School of International Service summer website.

Inisiatif Pembangunan Wanita (PENITA)
Women’s Development Initiative

About the Initiative: Sustainable Development Network (SUSDEN) Malaysia believes that the quest for sustainable development is possible only through genuine gender partnership and equity. This belief has motivated SUSDEN Malaysia to establish a programme called Inisiatif Pembangunan Wanita in the Malay Language. Translated into English it means Women’s Development Initiative. The popular acronym of the initiative is Inisiatif PENITA.

The Focus of the Initiative: The focus of the initiative is eliminating all forms of gender biases and building gender partnership based on equity and rights as humans with social and stewardship responsibility to ourselves and to the future generations.

Strategic Option for Action: One strategic option adopted to advance the initiative is through the publication of a magazine in the Malay Language called Majalah PENITA. The magazine encompasses two concepts of transformation and change for development. First, it is a community media – a media of the people, by the people and for the people.  Second, it is a social enterprise - an enterprise not aimed at profit making. Instead of people serving the economy, social enterprise is making the economy serve the people.

The Internship:  PENITA is looking for an intern who can help further develop the upcoming website and communications strategies. Nonetheless, if the intern does not have this particular background, there is still an ongoing research to document the pioneering women of Malaysia their life, successes, and challenges.
Ideally, PENITA would like to work with the intern, find out his/her interests, and then devise a programm of work to suit the students needs as well as their own. They require someone who is independent, resourceful, and flexible.  The intern will be based in Kuala Lumpur and occasionally in Kuantan, where the rest of the team is.

For further details, please contact: Mrs. Sunitha Bisan Gunasegaran
Coordinator Inisiatif PENITA
