Global Partnerships for Sustainability Science
American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting

Boston, 16 February 2008

Fundamental research is being conducted around the world to create the knowledge and know-how needed for promoting a transition toward sustainability. The great challenge, however, is how to bridge the "know-do" gap separating the findings of sustainability science from the practice of sustainable development. Across sectors and regions, the cry has been the same: Researchers are increasingly frustrated that their findings are not put into practice, and practitioners are increasingly frustrated that their needs are not addressed by the science and technology community. Significantly, however, the last decade has also seen the emergence of a number of innovative partnerships to promote more usable knowledge in support of sustainable development. These partnerships have increasingly spanned the globe. Many have failed, and none have been wholly successful, but the best are producing some remarkable breakthroughs in the creation of a global knowledge base that is nonetheless truly usable in the efforts to promote local sustainability. This symposium analyzes and compares some of the most innovative partnerships from around the world, with an emphasis on those that have emerged to promote sustainable management of natural resources.
