This project examines the trade, economic development and environmental policy dimensions of a global biofuel industry. On May 9, 2007, a workshop of world experts on international trade, economic development and environmental externalities was convened at Harvard. The purpose of the workshop was twofold: to identify the most important research questions going forward in each of the three areas of trade, economic development and environmental policy; and to produce an interim report to be available as an input for the Heiligendamn G8 Summit in June 2007. Following the workshop a work plan was developed that includes primary research and a seminar to review research in progress and provide a forum to invite key experts from around the world to the Harvard Kennedy School. In May 2008, we convened under the auspices of the San Servolo Executive Sessions on Grand Challenges of Sustainability a second workshop on biofuels and sustainable development. This brought together key decision makers from the United States, Europe and developing world with experts in energy, environment and agriculture. A third workshop in May 2009 on biofuel certification processes was held. Project findings will be summarized in an edited volume.
