2008 Sustainability Science Water and Development Student Research Fellowship for Harvard Phd Candidates

The Water and Development Group is now accepting applications for the Sustainability Science Water and Development Student Research Fellowship for 2008-09.

Purpose: The purpose of the fellowship is to support Harvard PhD candidates conducting research on issues at the intersection of water and development. The fellowship is designed to assist doctoral students from a variety of Harvard programs perform their research.

Award: In the 2008-09 academic year, there is $12,000 available for student funding and we plan to make awards of up to $5,000. The award can be used for a variety of activities such as conducting field work, and paying travel costs and/or expenses for carrying out research. No tuition support or indirect costs may be covered by this award. This fellowship is made possible by the Sustainability Science Program at Harvard's Center for International Development and a generous gift from the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea.

Eligibility: Applications will be accepted from students enrolled in one of Harvard's doctoral programs.

Application deadline: Applications must be received by 8 April 2008.

Application process: Students should submit, by email, an application that contains:

  1. Cover page (click here)
  2. A description of what they would do with the support and why it will benefit their research, including a title (500 words max)
  3. Detailed budget for proposed use of funds
  4. Curriculum vitae
  5. One recommendation letter from a member of the Harvard faculty
  6. A list of other sources, if any, approached for funding

Selection process: The applicants will be assessed based on the quality of their proposed research and their ability to undertake the research.

Requirements: Recipients of this fellowship will be expected to submit a progress report on the use of their funding. It is also expected that the recipient will present his/her work at a Harvard seminar.
