Suerie Moon awarded Hauser grant for research on civil society engagement in technical policy advocacy
SSP Pre-doctoral Fellow Suerie Moon has been awarded a grant from the Hauser Center Research Fund to support research and travel on the topic of civil society engagement in 'technical' policy advocacy. The study examines how civil society organizations (CSOs) conduct advocacy on technically complex issues that have traditionally been considered expert terrain and have therefore resisted grassroots influence. The study considers how certain issues get framed as technical vs political, as well as look at the risks and opportunities for CSOs involved, and final policy outcomes. The two main case studies are CSO engagement on the issues of intellectual property rights and access to medicines, and macroeconomic policies in highly-indebted developing countries, adopted in the framework of poverty reduction strategies.
